Amsterdam cultural information and guide
Dining out in Amsterdam
With around 1000 restaurants, Amsterdam is a true paradise for lovers of
delicious food and fine cuisine. The Dutch say that in Amsterdam you can eat in
many languages. Throughout the city you’ll find authentic restaurants from all over the world. In most restaurants, breakfast is served till ten in the morning. Lunch is usually between noon and two o’clock, and dinner between five and nine o’clock in the evening.

There are plenty of places to have a traditional Dutch meal,
but you’ll also find many other restaurants including Italian, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Tibetan, African, and many more.
Vegetarians are in for a big treat at the ‘De Kas’ restaurant, where the ingredients used in the food come from their own biological produce. If you love Italian cuisine, you should certainly visit ‘Toscanini’ along the Lindengracht.
The rich and famous can be found in the trendy ‘Supperclub’, where you have your meal laying down like the Romans used to do.
After dinner, the restaurant is transformed into a night club, and various DJ’s will play the best tunes.
‘Nomads’ is an Asian lounge restaurant that ¡s popular with Amsterdam’s hip scene. Make sure to reserve beforehand if you’re planning to go there.
You can also choose for a romantic dinner on a tour boat, enjoying your food with candlelight while floating along the many canals of this wonderful city. Check www.lovers.nl for more information and reservations.
While many kitchens close at ten, you’ll still be able to find restaurants and cafeterias throughout the city that remain open until late to have a bite. Enjoy your meal!
Nightlife
If you would like to mingle among the locals, you should visit the so-called
brown cafes. You’ll soon find that the Dutch are keen to start a conversation with visitors. They take pride in their ability to speak various languages, are curious by nature and will happily give you insider’s tips about their city.
Amsterdam is known for its bustling nightlife, with many trendy bars and grand cafes playing live music. After midnight, many people can be found in the discos. The best known discotheques in Amsterdam are ‘Paradiso’ and ‘Melkweg’ near the Leidseplein square, which regularly offer concerts by Dutch and foreign artists.
Club 11 is a venue that combines great music with culture. Since its opening
three years ago, this is the place to be for young VJ talents hoping to be
discovered, and they also have beautiful art expositions in collaboration with
the Stedelijk Museum (city museum.) The adjacent restaurant is also opened
during the day, offering a fantastic cuisine and a great overview of the city
from the eleventh floor.
Coffee and shops
You might already know that a coffee shop in Amsterdam is not what you would
expect. Coffee shops sell soft drugs, which is legal in the Netherlands although
you have to be at least 19 years old to buy them. Don’t ever buy drugs on the streets.
Enjoy Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a relatively safe city, but just like in any major city you should
be careful with your belongings. Especially when travelling by public transport
or walking in busy shopping streets you should look out for pickpockets. The
best way to prevent being robbed is by leaving your valuables in the
apartment.
You should keep some rules in mind when visiting Amsterdam. For example, if
you’re caught urinating in the street, you will be fined 50 euros and will have to pay it immediately at the police station.
If you’re going to explore the city by bike, make sure to use the many designated bicycle paths. Do not ride on the pavements. Also make sure that both front and rear lights are working, and use them as soon as it gets dark. This is not only obligatory but also for your own safety. Also make sure to have a good lock on the bike for whenever you park it on the street.
If you plan a visit to the ‘Walletjes’, the red light district, remember that it is not allowed to take any pictures of the prostitutes. As said before, never buy drugs on the street. You might be approached by dealers, but chances are big that the drugs they offer are fakes. Apart from being a health hazard, you run a serious risk of being robbed while holding your wallet in your hand to pay them.
If you make sure to follow the above mentioned tips, you’ll find that Amsterdam is a very pleasant city to visit and you’ll certainly want to come back again. Have a nice stay!
